Service focus

Foil highlights.

Dimension, movement, and light woven through the hair. A result that shifts with every turn of the head and looks like it could only ever be yours.

Why choose it

Why foil highlights?

  • Dimensional colour that moves. Unlike global colour, foils work with light and shadow to create depth and the sense that your colour could only ever belong to you.
  • Tailored to you from the first appointment. Placement, saturation, and the number of foils are decided for your specific hair, face shape, and lifestyle. Not a formula applied to everyone who sits in the chair.
  • A gentler path to brightness. For those wanting to go lighter without the shock of an all-over change, foils introduce light gradually and naturally, section by section, appointment by appointment.
  • Grows out beautifully. Strategically placed highlights have a softer, more natural-looking regrowth line than global colour, more forgiving between appointments and easier to maintain on your schedule.
  • The foundation for iconic colour looks. Balayage, money piece, sun-kissed, lived-in colour: virtually every aspirational result begins with a well-placed, well-executed set of foils.

Before you book

What to consider first

  • Your natural base level matters. The lighter your starting point, the more achievable a bright result in a single appointment. Darker bases may require staged lifting across multiple sessions, and patience is part of the process.
  • Existing colour complicates things. Permanent colour, box dye, or previous chemical services in your hair directly affect what's achievable and how we approach the service. Your stylist needs the full picture before we begin.
  • Toning is a separate service. At Scanlon Hair, toning is an add-on. It is not included in the foil service price. In almost every case, it's essential. Your stylist will recommend it at your appointment.
  • Timing is non-negotiable. Foiling services require adequate time for safe, even lift. We will not rush the process, so please allow for the full appointment window.
  • Condition is the foundation. Damaged or over-processed hair lifts unevenly and may not reach the desired lightness in a single session. The healthier your hair going in, the better the result coming out.

An essential step

The importance of toning

Foils lift natural pigment from the hair. The result before toning is typically a spectrum of warm yellows, golds, and oranges, depending on your starting base. Toning is what transforms that lifted hair into a finished colour result. Without it, highlights can look brassy, flat, or unrefined.

At Scanlon Hair, toning is a separate add-on service, priced independently so you only pay for what your hair genuinely needs. In almost every foiling appointment, your stylist will recommend it.

What's possible with tone goes well beyond neutralising brassiness:

  • Root shadow & root stretch. A richer, deeper tone placed at the root creates natural-looking shadow, adding dimension, softening regrowth contrast, and grounding the colour so it reads as intentional rather than grown-out.
  • Colour melts. A seamless gradient from darker roots to lighter ends, blended so gradually the transition simply disappears.
  • Cool, icy, and platinum blondes. Violet-based toners cancel warmth entirely, achieving the bright, almost-white blondes that read as editorial, not accidental.
  • Honey, caramel, and golden blondes. Warmth in blonde is built with tone. These sought-after shades are a toning result as much as a lifting one.

Choosing your service

How blonde do you want to be?

Our Classic and Super Blonde foiling services both use products from L'Oréal's Blond Studio range. The distinction between them is one of technique, not product. It's about how many foils are placed, how finely the hair is woven, and what kind of result that density produces.

Classic Foils

Foils placed at a natural density using a standard weave, picking up sections that create dimension, contrast, and movement through the hair. The result is defined highlights that play between light and shadow, bright where the eye is meant to land and natural where it isn't. The right service for the majority of foiling customers, and the most common foiling appointment we perform.

Super Blonde Foils

The same Blond Studio product, applied with a finer weave and at a significantly higher density. More foils means more of the hair is lightened. The visual outcome is a brighter, more uniformly lifted result across the head. The technique of choice when the goal is a very light blonde, high contrast, or comprehensive coverage that leaves little natural colour visible between highlights.

Your stylist will recommend the right approach at your appointment based on your hair and your goal. If you'd like to talk it through beforehand, a free consultation is the best place to start.

Suggested add-on services

Metal Detox Treatment Highly recommended

Metallic buildup from hard water and environmental exposure dramatically increases the risk of breakage during lightening and can cause colour to shift or process unpredictably. Applied before the foiling service begins, Metal Detox neutralises these particles at the molecular level, reducing breakage risk by up to 97%. For any lightening service, this is the responsible foundation for a safe, beautiful result.

Toning

The finishing step that transforms lifted hair from warm and unrefined to polished and intentional. Toning is a separate add-on service at Scanlon Hair, and in almost every foiling appointment it's what takes your result from good to exceptional. From root shadows to icy blondes, the tone makes the colour.

Styling

A professional blow-dry or iron set after your colour service is the moment everything comes together, with light playing through dimension and colour moving as your hair moves. It's the fullest expression of what foils can do.

Service options

Choosing your coverage

Foiling services are offered by head coverage. The more of the head we foil, the more complete and uniform the result. Your stylist will guide you to the right option based on your goal and your hair.

1/4 Head

Parting

Foils are placed at the parting and through the most visible sections around the face, the areas that catch the most light and are most seen when the hair is worn down. Ideal for a subtle, low-commitment introduction to highlights, or for refreshing only the most exposed areas of an existing result.

1/2 Head

Top Half

Foils are applied from the parting through to approximately the crown, covering the top half of the hair. Our most popular foiling service, delivering visible brightness and genuine dimension while leaving the underneath natural. The contrast is beautiful when the hair is worn up or moves in the light.

3/4 Head

Top & Mid

Foils extend from the parting down through the mid-lengths, covering the majority of the hair. Recommended for customers who frequently wear their hair up, or those who want a more complete result that holds up to scrutiny from every angle, not just from the front.

Full Head

All Over

Foils are applied throughout the entire head of hair, from parting to nape. The most comprehensive option, delivering an all-over lightened result with no natural sections left untouched. Often the service of choice for first-time highlights, a significant colour change, or customers working toward a bright, uniform blonde.
