Bespoke Balayage

Balayage is a freehand technique that, in expert hands, gives a beautifully subtle result with softer, less noticeable regrowth lines than a head of foils. This technique is more suited to mid to long length hair.

Service focus

Bespoke balayage.

A freehand technique painted directly onto the hair, not enclosed in foils. The result is a natural, sun-kissed gradient that looks like it was always yours, with softer regrowth lines and longer stretches between appointments.

What it is

What is balayage?

Balayage is a freehand colouring technique where lightener is painted directly onto sections of hair rather than applied through foils. The word is French for "to sweep", and the motion is exactly that: colour swept on by hand, following the natural fall and movement of the hair rather than a mechanical pattern.

The result is a natural, graduated colour effect that deepens at the root and brightens through the mid-lengths and ends. Because the colour is painted freehand, every balayage result is unique to the individual, shaped by their hair's growth pattern, texture, and natural base. At Scanlon Hair, our Bespoke Balayage service is fully customised to your hair's current condition, your natural base level, and the specific look you are working toward.

Balayage is best suited to mid to long hair lengths, where the gradient has room to develop fully. It works beautifully on natural hair and on previously coloured hair, provided the condition and history of the hair are taken into account before the service begins.

Why choose it

Why bespoke balayage?

  • Softer regrowth lines. Because balayage doesn't start at the root, new growth blends into the colour naturally. You won't see a sharp demarcation as the hair grows; the result just gradually softens and evolves.
  • Longer time between appointments. Most balayage customers return every 3–4 months, compared to 6–8 weeks for permanent colour maintenance. The low-regrowth characteristic of the technique makes it significantly more forgiving on schedule and budget.
  • A result that belongs only to you. No two balayage results are identical. The placement is decided for your specific hair, face shape, and lifestyle, not applied as a formula to everyone who sits in the chair.
  • Natural light interaction. The freehand placement mimics the way the sun naturally lightens hair, creating dimension and warmth that moves and shifts with the light rather than sitting flat across the head.
  • Lower ongoing commitment. For those exploring lighter colour for the first time, balayage offers a more gradual and reversible path than an all-over lightening treatment. Each appointment can build on the last at your own pace.

Before you book

What to consider first

  • Hair length matters. Balayage requires enough length for the gradient to develop properly. Mid to long hair is the ideal canvas. Shorter hair may be better served by a foiling technique. Your stylist will advise at your appointment or consultation.
  • Your natural base affects the outcome. The darker your natural base, the more lifting is required to achieve a visible result. Customers with darker hair should expect a staged process across multiple appointments to avoid damage and achieve an even, blended result.
  • Existing colour affects what's possible. Previous permanent colour, box dye, or chemical services in the hair directly affect how the hair lifts and how predictable the result will be. Your stylist needs your full colour history before we begin.
  • Toning is almost always part of the service. The lifted sections typically require toning to achieve the intended shade, whether that's a cool, ashy blonde or a warm, honeyed result. Toning is a separate add-on service at Scanlon Hair and should be expected as part of your appointment.
  • Condition is the foundation for everything. Damaged or over-processed hair lifts unpredictably and may not achieve the target result safely in a single session. We assess condition honestly before we begin.

Suggested add-on services

Metal Detox Treatment Highly recommended

Metallic mineral buildup from hard water dramatically increases the risk of breakage and unpredictable colour during any lightening service. Applied before the balayage process begins, Metal Detox neutralises these particles at the molecular level, reducing breakage risk by up to 97% and allowing the colour to process evenly and predictably.

Toning

Toning transforms lifted balayage hair from warm and raw to a finished, refined result. Without it, lifted sections can appear brassy or unintentional. Whether you're after a cool, icy blonde, a warm caramel, or a seamless colour melt, the tone is what makes it.

Styling

A professional blow-dry or iron set reveals the full dimension of a balayage result. It's the moment the gradient truly comes to life, colour shifting and moving with every turn of the head.
